Types of Cookies
2. Types of Cookies
2.1 Cookies set by Define Media and how each is used on the websites and services
Generally, our cookies perform the following different functions:
2.2 Website Usability (Essential) Cookies
Some cookies are essential for the operation of our website. For example, some cookies allow us to identify subscribers and ensure they can access subscription content and Platform facilities. If a subscriber opts to disable these cookies, the user may not be able to access all of the content to which a subscription entitles them.
2.3 Browsing Experience (Functional) Cookies
We use functionality cookies to allow us to remember your preferences. For example, cookies save you the trouble of typing in your username every time you access the site, and recall your customisation preferences. We also use functionality cookies to provide you with enhanced services such as allowing you to share video links and post comments and feedback to publishers.
2.4 Performance Measurement (Analytics) Cookies
We utilise other cookies to analyse how our visitors use our portal and to monitor website performance. This allows us to provide a high quality experience by customising our offering and quickly identifying and fixing any issues that arise. For example, we might use performance cookies to keep track of which pages are most popular, which viewing devices and browsers are most popular, which method of linking between pages is most effective, and to determine why some pages are receiving error messages. We might also use these cookies to highlight site services that we think will be of interest to you based on your usage of the website.
2.5 Targeted Reach (Advertising) Cookies
Define Media and our advertisers may use cookies to serve your viewing device or browser with advertisements that we believe are relevant to you and your interests. For example, if you visit a website or watch broadcasts from a specific sector, the advertiser might infer you are interested in this topic and serve your browser with adverts from that sector. You might see these advertisements on some of our Portal web pages and on other sites that you visit.
2.6 Third Party Cookies & IP Address Processing activities
Define Media may use third-party service providers who may also set cookies on our website in order to deliver the services that they are providing. We also use or allow third parties to serve cookies that fall into the four categories above. For example, like many companies, we use Google Analytics to help us monitor our website traffic. We may also use third party cookies to help us with market research, revenue tracking, improving site functionality and monitoring compliance with our terms and conditions and copyright policy.
2.7 Sharing and Link Shortening Tools
Define Media website carries embedded ‘Share’ buttons to enable users of the site to easily share video links and other content on the site through a number of popular social networks. These sites may set a cookie when you are also logged in to their service. Define Media does not control the dissemination of these cookies and you should check the relevant third party website for more information about these.
If you shorten URLs from our portal, for example on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook, and use link shortening services such as bit.ly to do so, Define Media may rebrand the URL as a https://definemedia.net/xxxxx link. Also access to the portal, GiGaSoft platform and related web pages via mobile devices may sometimes offer features that allow users to share links with social networks and we may shorten the URLs in the same manner.
These link shortening services provide Define Media with anonymised, aggregated statistics relating to use of the shortened URL, for example by telling us how many times it has been clicked on. Define Media does not have access to the IP address of your computer collected by the link shortening service providers or any other identifiable information about you. Similarly, these service providers do not have any access to data collected on any of the Define Media web pages.
2.8 Local Shared Objects (Flash Cookies)
Define Media uses some elements of the Adobe multimedia services to deliver parts of multimedia content services and content with some, for example, flash based elements throughout the site. To improve user experience, Local Shared Objects - or Flash Cookies as they are commonly known - are employed to provide features such as auto-resume and for saving your preferences. Flash Cookies are stored on a user's terminal much the same as cookies are, however it is not possible to manage them at browser level in the same way.
2.9 Standard Statistics gathering for recorded videos and live broadcast viewings
Define Media uses a proprietary video streaming analytics module to gather non-personal usage information for video traffic and viewing statistics. This information is used to help our clients to better understand how their videos on our portal are consumed. From time to time, some content owners may require you to be registered and be signed in before you can access their broadcasts and other multimedia content so that they may collect your personally identifiable information such as your name, company and email address. By registering or logging on to access such content, please be aware that you might also be providing your personally indefiable information to the content owner.
